WHY IS THE FIRST BURN SO IMPORTANT?

Any quality candle has many factors that go into its creation. While there is a lot of testing that occurs to ensure you have the best experience, once the candle is in your hands, it is important for you to know how to get the most out of it too.

What is a Memory Burn in Candles

The most crucial burn to your new candle is its first one.  This is called a "memory burn"  The initial burn is the one that is most vital to a complete melt pool.  And, even more importantly a memory burn in the candle is the one that sets the boundaries and scent throw for every burn after that.

Preparing for your Memory Burn

A good rule of thumb for the first burn is to know the diameter of your candle.  For every inch in diameter that your candle is wide, you need to gauge one hour of burn time.  So, if your candle is 3 inches wide; you need to be able to burn your candle the first time for at least 3 hours. Most of Wilson Candle Co.'s candles are roughly 3.5 inches in diameter, so the first burn, you will want to allot roughly 3.5 hours.

Completing an appropriate memory burn prevents tunneling of the candle. This is where the candle burns down the middle of the vessel, leaving wax on the outer edges. We want you go get all the goodness from your candle and not leave any behind. You deserve to enjoy the whole candle!

Trimming Your Wicks

It is crucial to maintain your wicks. Wooden wicks are beautiful, provide an amazing crackle and are eco friendly. With that being said, it is important that you trim them prior to every burn. You can simply snap the excess ash off with your fingers or use a wick trimmer or nail clipper. You should trim your wooden wicks to about 1/8 to 1/4 inch - this will ensure you get the best experience from your candle.

If you notice the flame is high - that indicates it's time for a trim. Always ensure your candle is extinguished prior to any trimming.

If you accidentally trim your wick too short, simply remove some wax with a utensil around the wick so it can get enough oxygen to burn again.
